The Topographic Survey & GIS Field Day is a 3-day practical training designed to help engineering students and young professionals master modern surveying, mapping, and GIS technologies.

For years, we collaborated with universities, technical institutions, consulting firms, and contractors across Africa to enhance technical capacity through hands-on training and design bootcamps.

These initiatives have one goal — to translate theoretical engineering knowledge into real-world engineering solutions that meet today’s industry standards.

Despite advancements in GIS and remote sensing tools, many engineers still struggle to apply them effectively in practice.

Day 1 – Online Orientation
📅 Friday, 26th November | 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM (EAT)

• RDM 1.1 Topographic Survey standards & guidelines

• Fieldwork and data collection workflows

• Emerging GIS Technologies

• Introduction to RTK, Total Station, Dumpy Level & Drone

• Field templates and protocols

• Safety orientation & logistics

Day 2 – Physical Field Training
📅 Saturday, 29th November | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (EAT)
📍 Kenya Institute of Surveying and Mapping (KISM) Grounds

• Field safety & equipment handling

• Machine orientation and localization

• Best practices for traversing and data collection

• Spatial data management & QA/QC

• After-action review and feedback

Day 3 – Online Data Processing Session
📅 Monday, 1st December | 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM (EAT)

• Data cleaning, validation & reporting

• GIS tools and workflows

• Digital Terrain Modeling (DTM)

• Topographic map generation using Civil 3D

• Reflections and certification wrap-up

All PPE and survey equipment will be provided, and strict safety protocols will be observed throughout the training.
